Making the first move isn’t just Bumble’s motto — it’s also a great New Year’s Resolution. Why? Well, 2020 is getting into full swing, and women are more empowered than ever. It’s time to put some dated, sexist mentalities to bed, including the notion that men should be in control in dating situations.

On Bumble, when it comes to matches between opposite sexes, women must make the first move. However, we don’t always own the next step: the conversation that then leads to a date. Shouldn’t we be at a point where women feel comfortable doing this?

I’ve seen so many friends wait for their match to respond to a message, or get anxious that their match hasn’t asked them for a date yet. I think the solution is just to do it yourself. The time has never been better to challenge the old-fashioned gender roles that still somehow exist in dating!

Start small, whether on Bumble or in person. You don’t have to go in with a deep, meaningful conversation topic. Even something like “I’ve been dying to try this new pizza place, want to join me?” or “I’m going out with work friends on Friday, you should come!” could do the trick! If your match is already messaging back and forth with you, chances are they’ll be keen.

If you’ve made that first move, you’re in control of how the night goes. I’m sure your match will be delighted that you took the pressure off them and asked them out. Small wins equal more confidence — and confidence is one of the sexiest qualities. It demonstrates that you have belief in yourself and the self-worth to get what you want. What’s more attractive than that?

Asking for a date isn’t pushy, too forward, or needy. It takes strength to say what you want. It’s about building confidence, self-worth, and self-assurance, all of which you deserve. So do this for you, and start 2020 as you mean to go on: determining your own future.
